The ASCA X - ray spectrum of the powerful radio galaxy 3 C 109

چکیده
We report the results from an ASCA X-ray observation of the powerful Broad Line Radio Galaxy, 3C109. The ASCA spectra confirm our earlier ROSAT detection of intrinsic X-ray absorption associated with the source. The absorbing material obscures a central engine of quasar-like luminosity. The luminosity is variable, having dropped by a factor of two since the ROSAT observations 4 years before. The ASCA data also provide evidence for a broad iron emission line from the source, with an intrinsic FWHM of ∼ 120, 000km s . Interpreting the line as fluorescent emission from the inner parts of an accretion disk, we can constrain the inclination of the disk to be > 35 degree, and the inner radius of the disk to be < 70 Schwarzschild radii. Our results support unified schemes for active galaxies, and demonstrate a remarkable similarity between the X-ray properties of this powerful radio source, and those of lower luminosity, Seyfert 1 galaxies.

X-ray and lensing results on the cluster around the powerful radio galaxy 4C+55.16
We present results from ASCA and ROSAT HRI observations of the powerful radio galaxy 4C+55.16 at redshift 0.24. Extended soft X-ray emission is imaged by the ROSAT HRI. The X-ray brightness profile is sharply peaked on the radio galaxy, characteristic of a strong cooling flow. The X-ray spectrum obtained from ASCA is consistent with multi-phase intracluster gas. There is evidence for an absorbe...
متن کاملSpatial and spectral X-ray properties of the powerful radio galaxy Hercules A: environment and jet/ICM interaction
We investigate the X-ray properties of the powerful radio galaxy Hercules A (3C 348) using ROSAT HRI, PSPC and ASCA observations. The ASCA data are well fit by a thermal plasma model with a temperature of about 4.3 keV and abundances 0.4 solar. The HRI observation clearly reveals extended and elongated X-ray emission. For radii greater than 10 arcsec, the surface brightness profile perpendicula...
متن کاملThe X - ray emission of 3 C 346 and its environment
We present a detailed spectral and spatial analysis of the X-ray properties of the compact and unusual radio galaxy 3C 346, combining information from ROSAT and ASCA. The dominant component of X-ray emission (∼ 10 44 ergs s −1 in each of the 0.5-3 keV and 2-10 keV bands) is unresolved and not heavily absorbed (intrinsic N H 2×10 21 cm −2), with evidence for variability of 32 ± 13% over 18 month...
متن کاملFe emission and ionized excess absorption in the luminous quasar 3C 109 with XMM–Newton
We report results from an XMM–Newton observation of the broad–line radio galaxy 3C 109 (z=0.3056). Previous ASCA data revealed the presence of a broad iron line from the accretion disc with which the XMM–Newton spectrum is fully consistent. However, although improving the ASCA constraints on the line parameters, the quality of the data is not high enough to distinguish between an untruncated ac...
متن کاملEvidence for inverse Compton emission in the powerful radio galaxy 3 C 219
Spectral analysis of ROSAT PSPC and ASCA archive data and a recent ROSAT HRI observation of the powerful FRII radio galaxy 3C 219 reveal an absorbed point–like source, coincident with the nucleus, and a non–thermal extended component aligned with the radio structure. The point– like source can be readily interpreted as a hidden quasar in the nucleus, giving further support to the unification sc...
